Puppy Potty Training - Frustrated

posted in Puppy News |

Okay, we’ve had Plinko with us now for about three months and she is STILL NOT POTTY TRAINED!  I am getting so frustrated.  She can be so good, but she still goes in the house once or twice every day.  She is so very smart and yet she doesn’t seem to get this whole idea of needing to do her business outside!

This morning I took her out and I even sat outside for a while with her until I got too hot and came in.  She stayed out another 20 minutes or so before she came and scratched at the door wanting in.  I let her in and sat back down on the sofa and she promptly walked in front of me and peed!  I couldn’t believe it, she’d been inside an entire 30 seconds, if that long!  I ran back to the door calling for her and she sat staring at me.   I finally got her out and carried her out to the yard and nothing happened.  She started wandering around the yard so I finally came back inside without her.

Now, just a few minutes ago, she came scratching at the door to get in, I let her in.  About 20 seconds went by and she went back and stood at the door looking at me.  I let her out and she went out and peed!  Go figure.  Why will she do it sometimes and not others?  I’m at a loss as to how to make it get better.

By the way, did you notice that when she wants to come IN, she scratches at the door.  When she wants to go OUT, she just sort of stands there.  Usually, if we don’t happen to see her standing at the door, she’ll just pee right where she’s standing.  Mind you, you have about a 10 second window from the time she gets to the door to the time you open the door before she just pees on the floor.  I don’t get as frustrated with this only because I feel like at least she is going to the door!  It’s when she pees on the carpet, making no effort to get outside, that I get frustrated.

Thanks for letting me vent!

This may not work for you–and you may not have the possibility around you–but we had our puppy trained in about 3 days! We borrowed my uncle’s potty trained dog and our dog followed everything he did. He wanted to go out he barked at us–Brownie would follow. She didn’t have an accident in the house after we brought the other dog in–and once he went home–she barked at me like he had to go out. Again–may not be universal–but it sure worked awesome for us!! Good Luck–that is SOOOOO frustrating!

That sounds like an excellent training technique! I wish I knew someone with a dog that could help out here. Oh well, I’ll just keep trying. Puggles don’t bark too much, but this one whines when she wants back in. Now if I could just get her to do that when she wants out! My daughter has begun training her to scratch at the door to tell us she wants out, but we’re not too consistant with that training.

I have raised so many coonhounds and beagles over the years, that I can’t even remember them all anymore. House Training can be very hard on ones nerves, but its also hard on the puppies because they get confused. If she is going to the door, that is great, she will increase that 10 seconds and wait until she is outside. My big dog Bear, he is a male and he has taken to lifting his leg and peeing against the corner of the house, talk about confused, if I yell at him, he looks at me as if he is saying….I am outside, so I can pee where I want to pee.

Thanks Breezie! Sometimes I just need a little moral support to let me know that eventually, it will get better! I think these poor dogs are easily confused by us! How do I say “bark or something when you want to go out, don’t just stand at the door!” in dog lingo? :-D

Thanks for visiting Monica! We’ve tried really hard with the training. Things are definitely improving now, I think part of it is the dog is older and can hold it longer. We still don’t let her move around all over the house, but we have increased where she is allowed to meander. The accidents are much farther in between incidents.
