Children and colds

posted in kids |

I am having one of those really long “bad mommy” moments.  Actually, it’s more like a “bad mommy” weekend.  My 11 yo had the worst cough and I don’t seem to be able to do anything about it.  I’m running out of ideas.

She started this cough on Wednesday or Thursday, just a few coughs here and there.  Thursday night it was getting worse.  She had trouble sleeping because the cough was waking her up.  Thankfully there was no school on Friday so we could sort of take it easy.  We did go do some shopping at the mall and just as we were leaving our last store she had a coughing fit.  I got her something to drink and she sucked on tic-tacs (that’s all I had with me) and we headed home.  She seemed okay the rest of the day, but by Friday night I could tell sleeping was going to be a problem.

I made sure she had water, cough drops and Vick’s vapor rub handy and rubbed on.  She only had a few coughing fits during the night, the Vicks seemed to help.  Last night was another story however.  We had spent a quiet day at home and I think she drank 3 or 4 cups of hot tea with honey during the day.  I used the vapor rub on her and gave her 2 Benadryl before she went to bed.  She coughed almost continuously during the night.  Amazingly, she says she’s not tired this morning, she felt like she slept good!  I think the Benadryl must’ve knocked her out at least, even though she was coughing.

She doesn’t have any other cold symptoms at all, just this cough.  I just don’t know what else I can do to help her.  She’s sitting here now coughing and then her eyes water and tears come down her cheak.  I just want to help her so bad!  Any suggestions?

I don’t know if I have any suggestions, but I sure feel sorry for her. I just want to hug her. I had a cold three days ago and took that Airborne stuff that a teacher developed. It knocked the cold within two days. It’s really pretty amazing stuff. I think it may work for your daughter because it is zinc which builds the immune system. Hope she gets better soon. Peggy

Well, I did go to the store this afternoon and bought her a lot of fluids to drink, more cough drops and triamini cough strips. I may go back and get some Airborne, I’ve never tried it, but I’ve hear a lot of good things about it.
