Cooking Spices

Cooking Spices

The other day I was cooking dinner and used the last of my cumin spice.  I was about to put the empty tin can into the recycling when it dawned on me that they don’t make those little tin cans anymore.  I think my empty spice can is an antique!  Makes me wonder how long I’ve had it in my cupboard and how old was that spice.

I was flipping through a magazine this morning and I fount and interesting ad from the spice company that had manufactured my cumin.  In the ad it shows a small tin can, identical to the one I’m now showcasing with my other antiques.  In the ad, it states a very interesting fact.  It says the with the exception of black pepper which they still sell in tin cans, spices in rectangular tins are at least 15 years old!  AACKK!

I think it’s time for me to go through my spice rack and get rid of all those old spices and get fresher ones!  Makes me wonder how much better my dinners will taste if I’m using fresher spices!

Oh my! I guess I need to throw out a bunch of spices. Another reason not to cook!

I know what you mean! I was shocked to think those spices were that old. I actually wish they still made them in those little tin cans, I prefer those to those little plastic jars.

ROTFL - you need to move house more often. When I was moving out of our home prior to this trip I tossed everything that was more than a few years old or didnt have a use by date- because neither of us could remember when they became compulsory but it was a long time ago! In Oz some spices come in tins - especially curry powder- it keeps better in a light proof container

Okay Lissie, the sad part about this is that we’ve done 5 major moves in the 21 years we’ve been married and I do throw out a lot of stuff when we move, but I can’t say that I’ve ever even thought about throwing out spices! Most of them are rather pricey and I guess it’s always seemed wasteful to me, but I also never really thought about how old they had become! We actually just relocated in April and yet again, I didn’t get rid of any spices. Maybe it’s time!
