Windy Wednesday

Windy Wednesday

Oh man was it windy today!  We were under a wind advisory the entire day, up until about an hour ago.  It was blowing our patio furniture around and pool toys that were laying out ended up someplace out in the yard.  Anything that wasn’t tied down was moved by the wind.  I have a little Halloween flag hanging outside and when I left to go pick up my daughter from school I realized the flag was gone.  When we got back home from school we searched our yard, the bushes, the trees, everywhere and couldn’t find our little flag.  Finally, we took the dog and went for a walk.  The wind was still blowing, but I was determined to find our flag.

We found it.  It was clear at the end of our street in the storm ditch.  It was all wadded up so I almost didn’t even see it.  I think I’ll keep the flag inside until all these winds die down, not sure when that’ll be.

Home Decorating

You know, you’d think I would learn that any time you buy a new home, the furnishings and decor that you had in your previous home don’t necessarily work in your new home. It doesn’t help when you have a spouse that refuses to ever get rid of anything so we’re always trying to work with what we’ve got. This last move was a bit different though.

We had purchased a new sofa and loveseat winter before last and then last Christmas we got a new entertainment center and our family room was coming together quite nicely. All the old furniture went into the basement. I’m really not too sure what he thought we were going to do with it. I guess he was thinking that eventually we might have the basement finished out and could use the old furniture down there. Then, January arrived bringing with it a new job for my husband and a relocation which means, new house, new floor plan.

Even though the employer was paying for our move, we knew we had a ton of stuff and felt it was senseless to try to bring it all with us. Plus, they don’t build homes with basements in Texas, no basement, no massive storage area for unused furniture. My husband actually agreed to let me sell stuff. I managed to sell 2 rooms full of used furniture along with some miscellaneous cabinets and such. By the time the movers arrived the only thing left in my basement was boxes.

Our new home is a completely different layout and is twice the size, so we had room to play with the furniture when we moved in. We bought a new headboard and footboard to go in the spare bedroom and are still looking for a small night stand. We also bought a new sectional for the T.V. room and still need tables in there. My daughter actually has a bedroom suite, it’s a T.V. room attached to her bedroom. This is a room we’ve never had before and so we’ve been purchasing storage solution type furniture for in there to house all of her toys and stuff.

There are some key items I’m always on the look out for like barstools for the kitchen island and hall tables and maybe a bench for the entry hall. The bigger items I’d like to find are chairs and ottomans for the guest bedroom and my daughter’s T.V. room. My mother-in-law will be staying with us in the guest room over Christmas so I want to try to get some of these items in place before she gets here.

I’m slowly getting my pictures hung, and even those are placed in completely different rooms than they were in before. I’ve completely changed my decorating scheme in my kitchen. I feel like I’m slowly getting rid of some of our older decor and bringing our decorating style into current times while still letting our personality show through.

University Interscholastic League

I’m just wondering if anyone has been involved with this, the University Interscholastic League (UIL).  I’m not sure if this is just something the Texas schools do or is it bigger than that?

My daughter has been asked to try out for the Ready Writing competition.  She is an awesome creative writer, so this comes as no surprise to me.  In Ready Writing, students get two topics and choose one.  Then they write an essay, letter, speech or something within a two hour time limit.  Then the entries are judged.  My daughter is very excited about this program.  She’s always loved writing stories, so I hope she gets selected to be on the team.  They will choose 3 students for each grade, 5th and 6th.  Guess we’ll just have to wait and see how it all turns out.

Dreaming of a Vacation

Some days I find myself just sitting, dreaming of someplace far away, some place like Paris, France. It would be absolutely dream like to find myself shopping at some of the Haute Couture shops in Paris and staying at one of the beautiful hotels in Paris and dining at any of their fabulous cafes. Wouldn’t it be amazing to be able to visit one of the top shopping destinations in the world?

There are so many hotels in France to choose from. I dream of staying in Paris, near the museums, shops and restaurants. There is so much to do in Paris, let alone the surrounding country side where I’m sure there are also many nice hotels to be found. It would be difficult to choose what time of year to go to France. Should I go during Fashion Week, or maybe go during the holidays, I bet Paris is beautiful all lit up for Christmas. Of course, isn’t Paris known as the City of Lights anyway? So maybe it’s all lit up anytime you visit! There are so many nice areas to choose from to visit. There is the Rue de France which is a pedestrian shopping street full of shops, boutiques, restaurants and cafes. Sounds like a wonderful place to begin my shopping excursion. Although, for more local crafts and shops, I might want to consider Vieille Ville, or Old Town. Don’t even get me started on all the museums and wonderful tourist sites that I would want to visit.  Please excuse me, I need to get back to my dream!
