Kids and Their Schedules
I’m somewhat frustrated. We had 16 students tryout for our 6th grade Destination Imagination Team and from those, we chose a team of 6. The maximum number on a team is 7, so we could technically choose one more.
I met with the chosen team for the first time yesterday afternoon. Our main goal yesterday was to congratulate and welcome them as a team, go over some rules, and create a meeting schedule. Well, everything went well until we tried to figure out when they can all meet. Of course, I expected each of them to have after school activities, but we have one girl who has something every single day of the week. This girl is in Student Council, Girl Scouts, Running Club, another running club, babysitting, scholastic league and several other things that I can’t think of right now! She was basically unavailable any day except for the weekends, and I’m sorry, but I’m not giving up my weekends.
I spoke with the school office staff this morning and we concluded that I’m going to have to pull this girl aside and let her now she’s got a tough decision to make. She either quits Destination Imagination or she quits something else. She is making it difficult for the team to meet because of her schedule. This is when my job gets tough, but it’s what I took on, so I’ll have to do it. We meet this Friday, so guess I’ll talk to her then.
