Bringing the Outdoors In

My daughter’s school canceled outdoor recess today because it was too cold, it was in the 40’s! WHAT? That’s right, people in North Texas think it’s the arctic when it dips below 55!

We moved here in April of last year from Northern Illinois and 40 is almost balmy to us. The school district my daughter was in before only canceled outdoor recess if the windchill or actual temperature was 10 degrees or below. Now that’s cold! This topic of differences brought my daughter to tell me some of the things she misses about where we lived before. Besides missing her friends, she misses the really tall trees, especially the one with her tree swing in it. She also misses the big fire pit we had in our back yard and having friends over to make smores, roasting the marshmallows over the fire.

I began telling her about our future plans for our backyard here in our new house. We have an in ground pool with some very pretty landscaping around it, but I’d like to add to it. I’d like to add an outdoor fireplace with a chimney and extend our patio cover out further for more shade. I’d also like to have a built in grill area. The way our patio is set up now is nice, I’d like to look at plans for Glass Conservatories to make it usable year around. So much of this could be done without changing the layout of the existing landscaping which would keep the costs down.

I informed my daughter that maybe, by the time she is ready to graduate from high school (6 more years) we’d have it all done and she could have her graduation party in the back yard! She just rolled her eyes….

You’re familiar with Chicago weather, so you’ll understand when I tell you that it is currently eight degrees here. Forty degrees is a heatwave!!

Corrin - I know, I’m sweating in the 40’s! My daughter and I were laughing when her school canceled outdoor recess because of the temp.! They don’t know what cold is.
