Going Green

I read today that Whole Foods is eliminating the use of plastic bags in all of its 270 stores beginning on Earth Day, April 22 of this year.  That equates to 100 million plastic bags being eliminated!  That’s amazing!

Customers of Whole Foods will be able to choose from free paper bags made of 100% recycled materials, reusable bags made from  80% recycled plastic bottles at a cost of 99 cents, or canvas bags ranging in price from $7 to $35.   Whole food also offers a discount to customers who bring their own bags.

I like this idea and I commend Whole Foods on taking the lead in getting rid of plastic bags.

good for them. i just switched to reusable grocery bags that were only $1.50 at target, and no only do i feel like i’m doing a good thing, it’s much easier to lug groceries in because the bags are so sturdy and have long handles that you can sling over your shoulder. a few of our local grocery stores even give a discount when you bring in your own bags.

i even picked a few and sent them to my sister who lives in manhattan!

My problem is remembering to take my reusable bags with me when I go to the store! I have a terrible memory.

The plastic bags can be recycled, but it’s difficult to find place that accept them for recycling. We have recycling curb pick up here, but they don’t accept plastic bags. I have found one grocery store around me that accepts them for recycling. It’s not even the store I regularly shop at, but I do stop by once in a while to take the empty bags.

I think that this is great! I have a ton of small bags that I whipped up inthe sewing room just for going to the store. The cashier usually forgets my bag discount though which is only 5 or 10 cents anyway. King Soopers (and I believe Safeway) also giev a 5 cent discount per reused bag.

That’s such a good idea, make your own bags! Did you make them out of a sturdy canvas or did you use something else? I don’t know any stores around us that offer any incentive to bring your own bags. I do try to use as few as possible though.

i prefer the paper bags anyway, they are sturdier, more useful, and environmental friendly. they make for good trash cans too :D
