Prevention - The Best Medicine

The weather here has been absolutely beautiful over the last few days. We spent most of yesterday enjoying the gorgeous day by sitting outside watching not just one, but two college women’s softball games. While my backside was sore from sitting on those metal bleachers for several hours, the sunshine I absorbed while sitting there more than made up for it.

I have to say though, I have observed over the last few weeks that so many individuals around here are suffering from severe colds and flu. I feel fortunate that my little family has not been affected, yet, and I hope it stays that way. One of my daughter’s friends at school was absent for 4 days last week due to illness. That’s when I start worrying that my daughter will come down with something. Thankfully, so far, it hasn’t happened.

I’ve mentioned a number of times here on my blog that my New Year’s Resolution was to start living healthier. I’ve really been doing this by being more conscious of the foods I consume, the fluids I drink and the exercise that I get. Fortunately, my family is also benefiting from my healthier choices. Because I am the primary grocery shopper, I get to make those decisions as to what foods and snacks are in my pantry and refrigerator. My intent is to buy things for myself, but what I see take place is that the items I purchase for me tend to disappear because my husband and daughter like my choices, so I have to buy more. That’s okay by me because I know we are all living healthier.

Surprisingly, it’s not difficult to find healthier choices in food and drink. For example, tea, something I’ve always had in my cupboard is full of health benefits. I used to only drink hot tea when I wasn’t feeling well. I’ve learned though that there are many health benefits in tea that I can benefit from even when I’m not sick. However, some teas are better than others.

Recently, I was given a gift of tea from the Revolution Tea Company and I discovered some of the best tea I’ve ever had. Their teas are high quality and fresher than many of those old tea bag teas we’re accustomed to. I’m particularly impressed with their organic teas and their bio-degradable pyramid tea bag, very cool.

As for the benefits of tea, there are so many, including basic hydration. Other benefits that I learned about include the fact that tea helps combat heart disease, helps lower cholesterol, and one of my favorites, it can help strengthen and protect bones. As a woman who is approaching 50 faster than I would care to admit, I have to consider osteoporosis and how I can combat it. If drinking tea can help, I’m happy to drink more of it.

The other benefit of having tea in my cupboard? My daughter enjoys a cup of hot tea now and then. I like knowing that when she’s drinking tea, she is gaining all those same health benefits. While I enjoy a little bit stronger flavored tea, she prefers the White Tea with it’s light, smooth taste. I’m going to get her some Organic White Tea to try, I have a feeling she’ll really enjoy it too and I can continue to watch her receive the health benefits of tea.

Basically, if you’re like me and are looking for ways to live a healthier life, consider tea with all of its health benefits as a method of prevention.
