Degree or No Degree

Degree or No Degree

Do you have your college degree? One of the only regrets I have is that I never finished college. It’s a long story, but here’s the shortened version.

I did go to college right after high school. I really didn’t want to, but I did at my mom’s urging. I attended one semester before deciding it wasn’t what I wanted. Truthfully, I think I really missed my parents. You see, my parents were living overseas at the time and I had just finished 4 years of boarding school, thousands of miles away from home. I think in the back of my mind, I was just ready to live at home, not in yet another dorm. I truly missed my parents.

I did wind up living at home for about 6 months before I came to the new realization that if I wanted a decent job, I had to go back to school. So, I got myself enrolled again, packed up my car and headed back to college. I did really well, attending pretty much year around for 3 years until I found myself falling into a depression and felt once again, a pull to go back home. My parents had now moved back to the states, but they were in California, I was in Texas. This time, I packed my things and left for California.

I did get a good job and worked really hard at an aerospace firm. I didn’t feel like I’d reached my goal of getting my degree so I went to night school while working full time. I also got married and we bought our first home, all the while, working on my degree. Then, the final straw, my husband got a new job that required us to relocate. At this point, I had now attended 4 different colleges and universities. Very frustrated, after our move, I have never returned to school.

A year or so ago, I looked into getting an online degree to complete my goal and my education. There are so many options out there now and so many accredited schools that offer online programs. I really just need to be at a point in my life that I’m willing to be dedicated to it. I will have to be very organized and not procrastinate. I’m not sure I’m quite to that point yet, but I am getting close.

When I go back to school this time, it won’t be because of a job, it will be strictly because I want to reach my own personal goal of having a degree. In the mean time, I will continue to try to grow my sewing business and learn through experience.

I left school at 16 with 12 GCSE’s and then got an NVQ level II. Sadly my education ended there. I have been trying tow work out recently if I would like to go and study. My partner just graduated with 2 majors and a minor. I don’t think I will ever reach that height.

I know what you mean, I don’t think I’ll ever have a graduate level degree or even a double major, but it would certainly be nice to finally have a college diploma, just for my own personal satisfaction.
