Sew Crafty Friday

posted in sewing |

I have been so busy over the last couple of weeks that I haven’t sewn a thing. I have a few project in my head and one embroidery project that I’m getting ready to do. That particular project has to be done by next Friday, so I’ll be sure to post pictures as I progress with it, it’s currently in the planning and design stages.

So, for this weeks Sew Crafty Friday meme sponsored by Waiting For Him I have decided to show the bag that is currently under way. It’s actually almost done, I just haven’t had time to get in there and finish it!This is my second jelly roll bag. It’s made from jelly roll strips, fully lined and supported by interfacing to allow it to stand up and not just flop over. I am adding a snap closure to this one. It may be another week or so before I can finish it, but here it is as of today.

I’m so jellous of you. lol I haven’t sewn anything before Christmas and I just can’t seem to get the motivation to dig out my sewing machine again. Maybe your post will be the inspiration I need.

Thanks for the nice comment on my blog! I guess the dress could be for Easter–but I don’t have a particular child in mind. I just like to sew and this pattern jumped at me, LOL!
I love the jelly roll bag! I’ve heard of these before, but I don’t really understand what is meant by ‘jelly roll.’ At least in this context, not in the Dunkin Donuts sense, LOL!

Kim - I had to make myself go take a class on making these jelly roll bags to get myself back into sewing!

A “jelly roll” of fabric is basically 2 1/2 inch x 44 inch fabrci strips of coordinating fabrics layed on top of each other and then “rolled”. I don’t have a full one or I’d take a picture of it, I’ll have to do that next time.

Anyway, you can use the pre-cut strips to make bags, or quilts or table runners, or many other things.

So interesting this jelly roll. Expensive? The roll looks so bulky must be many metres of strips. Are the strips all joined together and all strips different patterns? The color is really pleasant.

That’s adorable, and so spring-y! I love big bags, too — there’s something very comforting about knowing I’m carrying just about anything I could ever need.

Thanks JoJo! Come back anytime, I try to post pictures of what I’m working on a couple times a week at least. :-D

Laurie - Thanks, that’s very nice of you to say. :-D

Fatiah - A jelly roll of fabric is usually between $25-$30 (U.S.), but they contain enough fabric to make 2-3 of these fabric bags or an entire quilt. Of course, if you like cutting fabric (I don’t) you can simply buy yardage and cut your own strips.

Thanks Kate - I know what you mean, I hate leaving the house without “everything” I could possibly need. Of course, we ladies always have to haul items for our kids and spouses as well, so I’m not really sure how any woman gets away with carrying a small bag.

Such cute patterns. Very versatile for spring and summer. Love the ‘jelly roll’ idea. Never heard of it before, but read the comment you posted that explained it. Cool idea.
