I have been very busy and have several projects that I’ve either just learned or that I have been working on and set aside as a temporary UFO. I had trouble deciding which one to post here this morning, but, I chose this simple fleece blanket because it really is so easy and can be made in any size.

First, I purchase 3/4 yard of fleece. Cut that in half and you can create 2 blankets out of it. You need to purchase enough flat lace (something that looks hand crocheted) to go around all four sides, it just depends on what size blanket you are making.

I used a serger to go all the way around the edge of the fleece before attaching the lace, but this could be done on a sewing machine as well. I then used an edge joining foot which allows me to lay the lace and fleece next to each other rather than laying the lace on top. Use an edge joining stitch to join the two together. The bunny is a small embroidery that I did on my machine using a 100×100 hoop.

I had so much fun making this, it can be completed in just a couple of hours, I purchased more fleece and lace to make several more. These make excellent baby gifts!

That design is just adorable! Don’t you just love how simple projects like this become with the embroidery machine? You could add the baby’s name and birth date under the design. What does your edge joining stitch look like? I’ve used my three step zig zag for the same type of application, but I wonder if there’s a better choice. Thanks!

I reallllly wanted an embroidery capable machine but I got a plain ole’ sewing machine with some pretty embellishing stitches on it instead. My mom has two embroidery machines… maybe I can get her to give one up!!

    Your bunny is the cuteness!!

Must ask… do you have digitizing software to make your own designs?

Hadias - I’ve been racking my brain trying to think of anyone I might know that is having a baby and have come up with no one! I’m making several though because I really enjoy making them. Who knows, someone I know is bound to have a baby sometime! :-D

Loretta - I don’t have digitizing software, but wouldn’t mind having it. I can create designs to some extent, but there are many more things I could do with digitizing.

I think you’re mom should maybe at least “store” one of her embroidery machines at your house!

Bethany James - Sorry it took me a while to respond, I wanted to look up the actual name of the stitch I use to attach the lace to the blanket. According to my machine manual, it’s technical name is a bridging stitch. It does resemble a zig zag and may be the same thing as a 3 step zig zag, I’m not sure. If I knew how to do symbols, I’d draw it out for you here. Basically, it’s v..(upsidedown v).. v.. (upside down v)..
    Hope that makes sense!

I think your blanket is really lovely, especially the bunny! I was wondering if the lace was soft or stiff. My kids used to get their little fingers all tangled up in the stiff kind of lace, but had little problems with the more loose soft kind.

Cindy - The lace is fairly soft. If you prefer, I’d be willing to make one with binding instead of lace. Just let me know. :-D
