Coming Out of Your Shell?

Do you have an embarrassing moment that you’d like to keep closed and under wraps?

I have decided to share one of my most embarrassing moments with you that happened many years ago, but it was devastating to me as a pre-teen and I’ve always remembered it.

What I learned from my experience is that whether you’re eating Gulf oysters or shopping for clothes, you need to be informed, cautious, smart and sure.

Sew Crafty Friday

I’ve had so many project going at the same time lately! I don’t normally do that, but we are trying to build up our supply of completed items in order to do a show in July, so I’ve been working something of a production line. While I’m embroidering one project, I sew another. I’m even heading out today to pick up my new serger machine which will allow me to do a few things faster.

This is a fabric bag I just finished. It’s made from strips of fabric and a fat quarter for the lining. Even the pockets and handles are made from strips. This is a fun bag to make and fairly quick too, I even added a zipper closure to this one. This one took a bit longer only because I had so many interruptions!

Kids Beds

What kind of beds do your kids sleep in?

After leaving the crib, my daughter slept in a twin size day bed, a bed we all ready owned and used in one of our guest rooms. She was wanting a new bed when she was about 9, so we went furniture shopping. It’s definitely not easy finding kids furniture and we ended up moving her up to a queen size because we all ready owned the mattresses. Truth be told though, she wanted bunk beds in the worst way! We had lower ceilings at the time and I wasn’t comfortable with the beds we saw, so we didn’t get them then.

The biggest benefit of getting bunk beds would have been the space they save in the room. In the house we’re in now, we have very tall ceilings, so the bunk beds would’ve worked just fine. Oh well, too late for us, but if you’re looking for space saving bed ideas, you should consider it. If you order online, this site has very good customer service and you can read customer feedback. The site provides fairly detailed information about the construction of it’s beds as well as assembly instructions.

This one is one of my favorites.

Four Foods on Friday

It’s Friday! This has been an exhausting week, lots of midnight storms keeping us awake, staying up late visiting with my mom, and spending time on the road visiting quilt shops. Normally, I’m glad it’s Friday, but this week, as tired as I am, it means my mom is nearing the end of her visit. I will miss her.

This weeks Four Foods On Friday is in her honor. :-D

#1. American cheese. Sliced fresh or prepackaged processed cheese product? I’m not a big American cheese fan, but I prefer sliced fresh or the deli style package. Processed cheese is something I just can’t swallow unless it’s used in mac & cheese.

#2. What is your favorite cracker? My mom enjoys oyster crackers, but I have to say I prefer townhouse crackers with cheddar cheese slices on them.

#3. What hot breakfast cereal do you like? Think oatmeal, farina, grits, etc. The only hot cereals I eat are oatmeal and cream of wheat (which I haven’t had in years!)

#4. Share a recipe that uses corn. I like corn on the cob cooked on the grill. It’s really very simple. Peel back the husk, removing the silk. Rub mayonnaise on the kernels, replace the husks. Place on the upper rack of the grill and cook until kernels are tender. Slather in butter and enjoy!

Fiskars - Project Orange Thumb

My husband was headed to the hardware store the other day so I asked him to pick me up a pair of hand held garden clippers. He asked me what brand and, of course, I told him Fiskars. I am a sewer and I have to admit, my sewing room has several pairs & stlles of Fiskars scissors. I also have Fiskars scissors for use on every day items like paper. I am truly a Fiskars fan.

I love my new garden clippers and was checking out the Fiskars website when I learned of the Fiskars Project Orange Thumb for 2008. This is a grant program that provides community garden groups with the tools and materials they need to reach their goals for neighborhood beautification and horticulture education. Winners for 2007 ranged from Elementary schools to colleges and museums. The project is such a great way to promote community involvement. One of the winners will even be creating a rain garden.

I wrote a post last week talking about how my daughter and I planted seeds for the very first time. It was such a great experience and so much fun to do it with her. We’ve been monitoring our seedlings daily and it’s a great way to share time together. Project Orange Thumb is a great way to not only involve family, but neighbors too. We all know the importance of having green space in our community, this is a way to get the community, kids and adults, involved in a worthwhile project. So, why not promote creativity through gardening and submit your entry to Project Orange Thumb?
