Buying a New Iron

posted in sewing |

A few years ago I purchased a relatively cheap inexpensive iron. Keep in mind, I don’t really iron very much, so I wasn’t too choosy about what I bought. The problem has become evident of late that my iron apparently doesn’t get very hot, at least not as hot as better quality irons go.

This heat issue became a problem when I was attempting to do iron on transfers a few weeks ago. I couldn’t get them to work. It was suggested to me that my iron wasn’t hot enough and I have to agree. So, I’ve been searching for a better iron, one that gets hotter. I wasn’t really sure what all I should be looking for until I found this video.

What kind of iron do you own?

I have a Sunbeam iron. I think it works pretty good. Considering I got it for a wedding shower present almost 14 years ago! lol. Um except the cat chewed through the cord at one point, (taped it up) and the water/steam part doesn’t work any more. But other then that it works great! lol. I don’t really iron that much either, in fact I try to avoid it at all costs! But this Sunbeam has held up pretty good :D

Sue - Thanks for the info! I think I’m on my 3rd or 4th iron over the last 25 years. The one I have is fine accept it just needs to get hotter. It’s a Black & Decker and when it comes to crafting, it just doesn’t do the job.

I have a Rowneta (SP?). It is three years old and I love it. However I have been told the company changed and the new ones are not that good.

Beth - I’ve been considering a Rowenta, I need to do more research and figure out which one I want. If I buy one, I want it to be the last iron I ever have to buy!

I used to think that my iron got hot. But I ironed absolutely everything on the cotton/linen setting. Then my mom got me a very nice Rowenta for my birthday a year ago, and I realized how NOT hot my old iron got. This Rowenta means business, and I definately cannot just set it on cotton/linen and then go. I’ve got the melted lame to prove it.

Bethany James - I know exactly what you mean! I do iron everything on the cotton/linen setting. Anything lower and there’s no heat! Can you tell me which Rowenta you have? I really don’t know the differences in them and I need to figure out which one to buy.

I forget what kind of iron we have because I’m not sure that I’ve ever used it. LOL. I hate ironing. My grandma used to iron everything, including underwear.
