Hunting Dog

posted in Puppy News |

Do you see that sweet, innocent looking dog in the above photograph? Well, she’s a killer! A murderer of squirrels!

Last night, a poor little squirrel’s life was ended because it didn’t have the sense to stay on the roof, out of harms way. Instead, it opted to jump down, almost to ground level, right in front of our dog! Now remember, this little dog is have beagle, a true hunter. That squirrel, upon realizing its mistake, attempt to scale the side of our house but couldn’t seem to get a grip on the brick and started to fall. As it was falling, it attempted to jump into the bushes and the dog saw her opportunity and jumped into the bush as well.

In a split second, the squirrel was in Plinko’s mouth and quickly died, only after both dog and squirrel let out horrifying shrieks. The dog, a shriek of pure joy and the squirrel, a shriek of fear I’m sure.

It took us almost 30 minutes to get the squirrel away from the dog. We had to chase her down with brooms and finally startled her so she dropped the dead critter. It was a sad day in squirreldom I’m sure.

I know how you feel as I had a fox terrier when I was young who used to bring me many trophies.

She does look awfully innocent, she tries her hardest to be sweet! Those squirrels need to learn to keep their distance!

Michael – She loves that sofa with all those pillows. Nothing like a good nap on a comfy pillow after a full day of tracking and hunting! :-D

Jackie – Our nickname for this cute little dog is “the Beast”! She’s very loving and we wouldn’t trade her for anything, but she can be a real stinker!

Michael – I wanted to leave a comment on your blog, you’ve given some excellent advice on why to keep blogging. But, I keep receiving an error message saying I don’t have java script or cookies installed. I do, and I’m not sure why this is occurring. Just wanted to let you know.

I have two and they tag team the gophers. A brittany and a brussels griffon –both who are born hunters. We live in an area with many rabbits and gophers…as well as other animals. At least once per week I find an animal at the back door. The dogs are so proud of their effort! At least they’ve stopped bringing them indoors and depositing them in my studio…LOL

waterrose – Yes, I don’t think I want to have to deal with removing dead critters from indoors as well! It really is amazing to think how fast these domesticated dogs really are in order to be able to catch these little animals.

That’s pretty sad but poor old pinko can’t be blamed for his instincts. Thing is I really like squirrels :(

I am just this second thinking about starting an animal related blog and was thinking about going to the park to photograph squirrels.

At least your dog looks bigger than the squirril. My mother found an American Foxhound puppy in a storm drain and I went to pick it her up and bring her home. Well first off she is a runt and about half the size she should be so you can image how small she was as a puppy and she proudly brings me a squirril dragging on the floor because it is bigger than she is but she managed to snatch it and kill it :/

blueyes – It’s amazing how fast these little dogs really are. I think what surprised us the most was this squirrel practically fell right into our dogs mouth! Instead of running away, it ran right toward the dog, not too smart.
