Four Foods on Friday

posted in blogging |

I missed this meme last week, but I’m not letting that happen again! Posting Four Foods on Friday means my weekend is just about to officially begin. This week has been rather busy for all of us, so I’m glad it’s Friday. This is a great meme, if you’d like to participate, give Valmg a visit!

This week’s questions:

#1. When going out to dinner what items do your order? Appetizers, soup, salad, dinner, dessert. I usually will have soup or a salad and dinner. There are certain restaurants that I look forward to ordering desert, but that doesn’t happen too frequently.

#2. How predictable are you when eating out? Do you usually order a meal that you’ve had before or do you like to try new things? That too depends on where we go. Some restaurants I tend to order the same thing, particularly Italian or Mexican. Others, I tend to order something different every time I go in.

#3. When eating at a restaurant, what beverage do you like to order with your meal? Most of the time I just get water or ice tea, but, depending on my mood, sometimes I’ll order a glass of wine. I’m cheap and don’t like paying the price of alcoholic beverages that I can have or make at home!

#4. Name a meal that you ate at a restaurant that you liked so much you tried to recreate it, as well as the name of the restaurant and the recipe. I don’t have a meal that I’ve tried to recreate, but I did try to recreate the bread pudding that our local KFC used to have on their buffet. I’ve never been successful at making it though, so really don’t have a recipe to share. However, if anyone knows a good, sweet bread pudding recipe, I’d love it if you’d share it with me. In fact, I’ll post it here if you share it! :-D

My Mom used to make bread pudding. I’ll have to ask her how she made it.

I asked my mom and she shared this bread pudding recipe with me. She came across it a few years ago from Italian Cooking and Living Magazine.

    I vanilla bean
    6 cups whipping cream
    2 cups whole milk
    1/2 cup brandy
    9 large egg yolks
    1 1/2 cups sugar
ten 3/8″-thick slices rustic bread, crusts removed
2 lemons, cut into 20 thin slices
    10 mint sprigs
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Split the vanilla bean in half lengthwise. Scrape the seeds from the pod and combine them with the pod, cream, milk, and brandy in a 3-quart pan. Bring to just below the boiling point over medium heat. Discard the vanilla pod and seeds. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar until thick in a bowl. Slowly whisk in the cream mixture, whisking constantly. Arrange the bread in a 3-quart soufflé dish. Pour in the egg yolk-cream mixture, submerging the bread with a spoon so it soaks up some of the liquid. Place the souffle dish in a 10″ x 14″ baking dish and fill the baking dish with enough hot water to come halfway up the sides of the souffle dish. Bake 30 minutes, or until the edges have set and the center is still a bit runny; the pudding will continue to cook out of the oven and will set as it cools slightly Serve warm, garnished with the lemon and mint. Serves 10

I’m with you on the cheapness. I even hate ordering a hamburger at most sit down places. I can’t help but think I could have had one for a dollar at McD’s.

Tina - It has to be a really good burger for me to order one at a restaurant to justify the expense. I do enjoy not having to clean up after a meal though!

Luckily for me the local place has some great food really cheap and you get way more than you can eat in one sitting. I mean I pay $6.95 for 2 count em TWO chicken breasts fileted with a salad and 2 vegetables/potatoe. Can’t be that. And drink prices do kill me but the bar upstairs serves them at $3.25 so its not too bad and if you order a pitcher of Long Island Iced Tea downstairs in the restaurant it is on $8.00 verses $4.00 for a glass when you can get 4 glasses out the pitcher. Now also if I go upstairs half or 3/4 of my drink orders never make it to my tab cuz I’m one of the regulars :)
