My New Serger

My New Serger

posted in sewing |

I bought a new serger on April 4.   I attended the free class a few days later and learned quite a bit.  This is my first time to use a serger, much less own one.  I feel I can use the serger a lot to create more finished edges in the bags I’m making.

Today, I took the serger back to the store.  I spent the weekend trying to get it to work and I didn’t succeed.  I thought maybe it was something simple, but the lady at the store couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working either.  So, the serger is being sent in for repair.  What a pain in the butt!

I am disappointed, I had planned on finishing of some interior seams and some fleece blankets.  Oh well, I’ll just have to do it on my sewing machine, it’s just not as fast as a serger.

I was wondering about that!!! I didn’t think you should be having problems with a serger that soon. Hopefully either they repair it or you get a new one. Actaully you should get a new one!!!!

Ellen - They did try to find me a new one, but weren’t able to. It’s a model that they are no longer carrying. They also offered me a different model, but I got a very good deal on this one because it was discontinued, I don’t want to spend more money. I’ll just have to wait and see what they can do for it.

That’s too bad about the serger. My mother has been wanting one for the longest time and I wanted to buy her a gift, but I don’t know that much about sergers. I was thinking of going for a Singer since it’s a popular brand. Any suggestions? secondhandsewing.com

This is my first experience with a serger, so I’m not able to offer any help. The nice thing about purchasing from a dealer versus a big box store is that typically free classes come with the purchase. It’s a great way to learn how to use the machine.

Oh u are making me jealous my overlocker (serger) is in storage along with my sewing machine. I did the same thing as u and bought one without having used one - they are so good but u have to get comfortable with putting your foot down before u put the material in - hard to break the habit of a lifetime and broke a lot of threads learning! Hope u get it back soon - they are great for curtains too

Lissie - I thought I was doing so well, I got a discontinued serger and less than half of the least expensive model on the sales floor. It’s a bit intimidating though and I didn’t even take it out of the box until I was ready for my instructional class. Once I learned how to thread it and a few of the things I could do with it, I thought I was ready. I set it all up, threaded it, turned it on…. and nothing. Very frustrating, now I’ll have to wait 5 or 6 weeks for it to be repaired and hope I remember what I learned when I get it back! :-)
