Nearing The End

I can’t believe it, this is my daughter’s  last full week of school, then a 3 day weekend, a 4 day week and a couple of days the following week and she’ll be done. Okay, that was a very long way to say that my daughter has less than 3 weeks remaining of 6th grade! I can tell she’s getting excited and is looking forward to moving up to 7th grade at the middle school.

I’ve really been amazed at everything the school district has been doing to not only prepare 6th graders for going up to junior high, but also to get them thinking about high school and even college. Their main message is that the classes they take in 7th grade are the building blocks for what they can take in 8th grade which then become the basis for what they take their freshman year in high school, and so on and so on. Do you know how hard it is to get 12 year olds to think that far ahead?! I have to admit though, I admire my daughter and how she is taking all of this in.

She filled out her “6 year plan” last week and turned it in to the school counselor. I wish someone had gone over all of this with me when I was 12. Instead, I felt clueless when I went through school as to what my future held. I never felt in control of my future, I think that my daughter feels in total control. I’m so happy for her!

Back in my day I wish that part of the high school curriculum had been preparation for college. Just as it these days…I think many high school students are not prepared for the drastic change they undergo while adjusting to college life. Many students are honor students in high school and just assume college will allow the same and they have a rude awakening. I have a best friend who’s daughter had the exact thing happen to her in college. Also 20 or more years ago my cousin had the same thing happen. As a straight A student in high school she went to Texas A&M and had to drop out after one year due to he grades. It was devastating to her. Sounds like your daughter is being groomed very well and has a great head on her shoulders.

Here in Canada our kids go to middle school in grade 6 and high school in grade 9. So that means my daughter only has one more year to go in elementary. Man I feel old. lol

wow…my daughter is finished with school on Friday…yes, the 23rd! Scary. When I was a kid, we started mid-August, took a 3 week break at the end of Sept/beginning of October (for potato harvest), and then finished in the middle of June somewhere.

My daughter’s just finishing up 1st grade…she got mad at me because I didn’t buy a “yearbook” for her…honestly? in FIRST grade????

Ellen – I know that I was one of those students, high school came very easy to me, even though it was all college prep. I got to college and really had a very hard time learning how to study. I’m scared now because my daughter is telling me she wants to attend UT and it’s so huge! (even though that’s where I went to school!) I’d love to see her choose a smaller college. We have 5 years to work on that choice, I have to start planting little seeds in her mind! :-D

Kim – Some of the school districts around us have 6th graders in middle school, our district only has 7-8 at middle school. I’m really nervous about the big change next year, but my daughter is excited and I think ready to be away from the little kids! It will be interesting, to say the least.

Linda – I remember starting school right after Labor day and then getting out of school sometime in June. Now they start in late August and are out in June. The school district we’re in takes a short winter break in December and a Spring Break in March, but that’s it.

I know what you mean about the yearbooks! We didn’t get those until we were in high school!
