Boating Safety

I realize this is a sewing blog, but occasionally, I run across things that I feel are important and should be shared. In this particular case, when I saw that Arizona is attempting to combat alcohol related boating accidents and fatalities, I felt that was important enough to write about here.

My cousin and her husband live near Lake Havasu in Arizona and I know they spend many days of the year on their own boat out on the lake, they truly love Arizona Boating . I also know that they feel it’s very important that boaters be educated. Educated boaters are 70% less likely to be involved in a boating accident.

Did you know that Boating Operating Under the Influence is considered a Class I misdemeanor? Just like in driving a land vehicle, there is a legal limit for blood alcohol. In the state of Arizona, that limit is .08. Half of all fatal boating accidents in Arizona last year were alcohol related. That’s pretty disturbing.

The message here is this. Before taking your boat out, no matter where you live, get educated. While boating safety education is not required, it is highly recommended. Arizona makes it so easy, they even offer Boating Education Online.

If one can sometimes feel disoriented by just being on a boat, then I should imagine that it’s even more important to keep your wits about you when operating one. A car moves on a non-moving platform (i.e. the road). A boat doesn’t (i.e., moving waves, which can be temperamental at times).

There might not be as much boat traffic as there is car traffic, but death or injury caused by impaired boat operation while drinking is inexcusable. One death is one too many. (boat or car)

    take care…

we are responsible by tradition and law to operate our vessels in a manner that will not cause harm to our passengers or others. The weather conditions and presence of surfers made it impossible to make a beach landing with a powered vessel without risk of serious injury to the surfers or other users (like kids) present. That the beach has been traditionally used by dories and that a major incident has not occurred in the past do not excuse dory operator of his basic responsibilities.
