Memories of The Accident

Having my step-daughter here brings back so many memories. When she was just a kid she would come out to visit with us a couple of times a year and we’ve been sitting around the last couple of days looking at old pictures and reminiscing. All of the memories are great, except for one, that is the memory of the car accident.

One summer we had her out along with my niece who is close to the same age. We were having tons of fun and decided to go meet my mom for lunch. I had both girls in the back seat of the car and thankfully both were wearing their seatbelts and so was I. Everything was going according to plan and we were almost to our destination when a semi-truck turned in front of us at an intersection. I hit the brakes and did the best I could, but, through no fault of my own, we wound up going underneath the truck and the front end of my car hit his gas tank. It was so scary.

Amazingly, we all walked away from the car accident. The bad news? The car was totaled. The auto body shop said that there was no way to fix all the damage, plus, the engine had taken the brunt of the force and would probably never run correctly again. We did receive our insurance payment, but I wish I had also known how to get compensation for the diminished value of my car. I have always just been thankful that neither of the girls who were with me were hurt. It was a horrible experience, one I never want to have repeated.

I had a girl back over me in my own driveway when I was a teen. She started backing up and didn’t realize her wheel was turned. The right tire caught my shin and rolled right up it. One moment I was standing there, talking to a friend, the next I was flipping through the air and landed hard on the pavement. She stopped the car and asked if I was okay and I nodded. The wind had been knocked out of me and as I got to my feet the world started going black. My friend was at my side and I told him to take me into the house because I couldn’t see anything. He helped me up the walkway and into the house. I didn’t lose consciousness and my vision came back after a few minutes.
I felt a little lost and too shocked to be scared.

This information would have been helpful to me several years ago, although we were quite happy with how the insurance company treated our daughter regardless. I don’t know if Geico still does business the same way they did back in 1998, but they certainly made a positive impression on us then.
