Raquel -
I've always been good about watching what meats we eat and even our red meat is of the very lean variety. I am increasing the number of times we'll be eating fish though. We've always liked fish, it's just difficult to find fresh fish where we live and I'm not fond of frozen fish.

Sassy - I'm not good about taking medication, so I'm going to try to monitor my dietary intake first, along with regular exercise, and see if that helps. If not, I'm sure my doctor will prescribe something. Thanks for the input!

Jarret -
We recently had a death in the family, someone in their early 50's and the cause of death was heart failure. It's not something I want to have happen to me and I believe my husband is waking up to the fact that we do have to monitor our bodies as we get older and make adjustments to our eating habits and exercise regimens accordingly.

Hi Lynne, I hope everything will be ok. I do agree with Sassy...red meat is not good in our body.

Sometimes it is not just diet, both my husband and I have low good cholesterol, fine everything else, but high triglycerides and thus both take medication for that specifically. We need to do this because of our diabetes, as the triglycerides can mess with the blood sugars. Never a bad idea to have it checked, especially if you have a family history of it, as I do, and my husband does.
We actually gave up red meat for 6 months when my husband got pancreatitis and it made a tremendous change, but our kids missed the red meat so we do eat it in moderation now.
Exercise helps with the levels too.

Hi Lynne, it's great to hear that you are taking proactive steps towards watching and maintaining your cholesterol.

Having high cholesterol is one of those things that shouldn't be shrugged off because you think it'll go away. It is a very serious matter and can become life threatening if left unchecked. I think most people who know that they have higher levels then they should tend to not think so much about it and figure it will just go away.

It's hard enough living by yourself to keep things in order when it comes to what you eat and it is even tougher when you are living with somebody else. They can have a huge impact in what you eat and can influence you to eat foods you shouldn't be eating. It's good to hear that your husband finally realizes your situation and is making the changes for you (himself too in the future).

Thanks Marie, I've learned in the last couple of days that both of my sisters also have high cholesterol, so there is a chance it's hereditary. In the mean time, I'm going to see what I can do to get it down.

I also have a friend who is very cautious with her diet and is very fit, but she has a problem with controlling her cholesterol level. I think it's also hereditary and runs in her family.
But it's good to hear that you are aware of your cholesterol level and willing to get it down.
Good luck with the new diet. Here's to good health :)

How long have you had high cholesterol and what do you take? Do you remember what your level is? I'm gathering information to take back to my doctor, especially if it turns out to be hereditary.
