Hurricane Ike

Hurricane Ike

posted in home |

Hurricane Ike will be making landfall tonight in and around Galveston. 60% of Galveston’s population has evacuated while the remaining 40% opted to stay put and attempt to ride it out. I hope they have a good boat because with a 17-20 ft. surge, pretty much everything on the island will be under water.

Upon making landfall, the hurricane is expected to take a slight turn and head north over Houston, the 4th largest city in the United States. We lived in Houston for many years, and still have friends there. We’ve been able to touch base with some and have even offered our home as a refuge if they need it, although, for their sake, I hope they don’t. They will suffer the most from the high winds which will cause trees to come down and power to go out.

The storm will, at some point, downgrade to a tropical storm and that is what we’re expecting to see here in the Dallas area sometime tomorrow afternoon. We have been instructed to tie down anything and everything that is remaining outside so that our patio furniture and trash cans don’t become projectiles in the high winds. This is one of the few times I’m thankful that we don’t have any tall trees, but I will be praying that we don’t sustain any damage, particularly to our home.

I’ve purchased fresh batteries for the flash lights, stocked up on bottled water and filled our gas tanks. At this point, the only thing we can do is wait. It’s times like these that I wonder why we didn’t buy a house on Maryland Golf Courses or in the mountains with a view.

By the way, were you aware that you can visit LocalGolfConditions.com to find a comprehensive database of all area public golf courses in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. These databases are interactive and reviews are created by other golfers. In other words, at they say at LocalGolfConditions.com, this is “a website for the public golfer, by the public golfer”.

Wow - 40% decided to ride it out? Not very smart. I will be praying the make it through safely - but - I doubt there will be many! I live on the central gulf coast of Florida - we’ve had our share. WE know when they say mandatory evacuation - it’s time to leave.

I hope your family, and your friends in Houston, fare well through this. Stay safe!

I hope you are safe in Dallas. Ike is one big storm. I’ve been watching the coverage on the weather channel and following it online, particularly using Twitter to see what people in Houston are saying as the storm hits.

I hope you all are okay today. I used to live in Dallas, and never once had to worry about a tropical storm during my time there. So wild. I prayed for your family and those that are affected. I watched a little in the middle of the night when I woke up, but it hadn’t hit yet, so I’m hoping when I go looking now I’m not going to find Galveston no more.

Hope you’ll pop your head in and let us know how you are doing! Stay safe!

It’s 10:30 am Saturday morning and so far just wind and light rain out here. I’ve had the tv on all morning and Galveston and Houston are getting hammered. Luckily we(Dallas area) won’t be hit like they are. I saw on the tv that some people in Galveston that refused to leave are in big trouble and the emergency crew can’t get to them. So sad!!!! Today I plan to stay in, watch the weather, blog and work on my bible study and Thank God I’m alive!!! :)

I do not understand why someone who lives ON the coast and saw what Katrina did would think they can “ride out” the storm. Grrrrr!!

Was so hoping there would be an update from you. Hope everything is okay. We’re getting the rain now in the Midwest, but its nothing compared to what all of you have been through.

    Hope you are all alright.

You don’t want a house in Maryland necessarily either. When Isabel hit in 2003 it was still a tropical storm and I lived in the western part of the state. I can’t remember if it was a Cat 2 or 3 when it hit the Eastern Shore where my husband was with the Ntl Guard. The flooding from hurricane remnants in the last several years has been bad in the Mid-Atlantic states.

BoBo - While I certainly do feel sorry for anyone that has lost their home or had property damage due to any hurricane, I find sympathy difficult to come by for those who suffered injury because the chose to stay in the hurricane’s path.

Thankfully the storm did not affect the Dallas area as badly as it was expected too. We made out with some rain and wind, but nothing that we haven’t experienced before.

Nicole - Thank you so very much for your prayers. Dallas was definitely spared the brunt of Hurricane Ike and, thankfully, we only had to contend with rain and some wind.

Fatiah - Thanks for your positive thoughts! The storm has passed and we are now enjoying some beautiful weather.

Chris - Thanks! Ike is gone and barely touched Dallas, thankfully. :-D

Amanda - I think you’re right, stay away from any coastal home where hurricanes have even a chance of being a threat! Of course, it seems that no matter where a person chooses to live, there can be some sort of natural disaster!

Ellen - Thankfully, we only had to deal with the rain and some wind! I hope you were able to enjoy the beautiful day we had today!

Monique - I agree! I think only an idiot would choose to stay in the path of a hurricane when the officials are saying to “GET OUT”! I won’t feel too sympathetic!
