Real wood fireplaces are nice, but the gathering of wood and sticks, and the cleaning of the soot can be a bit of a chore unless you've gor someone else doing this for you! I've seen some nice gas ones where they look quite real and are a home decor feature in themselves, especially with a nice border. This is OK if you're watching TV and not looking right at it - you could almost not tell it's the real thing. I think that fireplaces add a real sense of comfort.
