Current U.S. Economy Sucks

posted in home, news |

As you all know, I recently began a 7 week employee training course that would lead to a great work at home position as a reservation specialist for a major international hotel chain.  Today was the beginning of my fourth week, half way through, and I was both excited and nervous.  Then, the other shoe dropped.

At 1:00 today, the call center director came into our training classroom and informed us that, due to the current U.S. economy which is resulting in people not traveling, all training classes were being cancelled and as of today, we were no longer employed.  Yep, it sucks.

I’d write more, but that pretty much reflects how I’m feeling right now.  I guess it really was too good to be true.

Lynne, I’m sorry that didn’t work out for you. Yes, the US economy does definitely suck. I can see evidence of it daily while out in my Target stores. Also today I dropped in at one of the McDonalds near my house at lunch, no less, and I nearly fell over backwards. They only had one cashier. The other 4 registers were closed. Also there were only a few people in there eating and it was 12:30 pm!!!!! Something has got to give and got to give soon!!!

I’m really sorry you got laid off. I was laid off August 1. I’m finally starting a new job tomorrow. Unfortunately, it’s a contract position, so may not last past the end of December, but at least we can pay the rent until then.

Wow, I’m really sorry to hear that. :(

I was recently out of work, and found temp employment through a temp agency for a local hospital. Jobs in my are (Wasilla Alaska funny enough) are difficult to find, so when they offered me a permanent position, doing the same job, for $1 less an hour (than i’m making through the temp agency), I had to take it. I doubt I will reap any of the benefits from working for a medical system, as I don’t think I can afford the insurance!

Regardless, with the way things are now, I knew I had to take it. I can still keep looking. Something else that is scaring me is now that we have three full time people in my department, by noon I’m bored. And if they let anyone go, it will be me first. Hang in there, and I hope something turns up for you soon.

Ellen - Thanks! I agree, there are signs everywhere we go that the economy is not doing well. I’m hoping we’re seeing rock bottom now and it will start to turn around, but I’m not sure.

Laura - Congrats on the job! I hope it continues to work out, I’m sure jobs are much more limited in your area. Thanks for the well wishes, I’m just going to hang out for a bit and see what happens. It’s possible I could be rehired in January.

Monique - Yep, I was training with Hilton reservations, why did you say it that way? Have you worked for them? I’m hoping I’ll get called back in January, I’ll just have to wait and see.

Carol - Your statement about greed is exactly what my husband said. It is sad but true, capitalism does tend to breed greed as a downside.

Thanks Carole - I just hope this economy starts turning around soon, after getting our recent IRA statements in the mail yesterday, on top of losing my new job, I’m not sure how much more we can take!

Val - Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that your husband is out of work. I’ve been through that and it is not fun. This economy has just got to start turning around and I hope it’s much sooner than later.

I’m really sorry to hear that.I guess it’s not so bad as you are not the breadwinner.Things in Singapore is not too good either with many jobs outsourced to other countries with cheaper labor cost or given to cheaper foreign workers. And many American airlines not doing too well has outsourced their reservations to Asia. I can understand the bitterness of the Americans losing their jobs to us. For your info I have been employed with NWA for 6 months here to handle the reservations but if the US economy gets worse, they will probably close Singapore office and transfer to cheaper Asian countries. Right now my employer try to make every single cent worth by measuring our work quantity and quality. It’s quite stressful and I’m not sure I can stay long. Hope something better comes your way soon.

fatiah - Sounds like your job at NWA is very similar to what I was training to do with Hilton, taking reservations. I was really hoping it would work out because I would be working from home so it wouldn’t take away from any of our other activities. Oh well, I’ll just wait and see what comes up next, in the mean time, I’m sewing like crazy!

Wow - that’s crazy. Things didn’t suddenly turn for the worst, so it’s hard to believe they would go to the trouble to start training your group!

We were on vacation last week, and while you could see that people were cutting back (us included), the industry seemed to be booming!

I am so sorry for you! Seems like a lot of folks empathize, and I do, too. We’ve seen our share of job losses (remember I’m from NY). *sigh*

I hope things get better for you. At least your husband still has his job, right?

All the best! :) Take care.
