Not So Wordless Wednesday – A Partridge in a Pear Tree

posted in sewing |

I’m pretty proud of my latest project. Not only did I complete this in a timely fashion, but I created it entirely from leftover fabrics and scraps that I all ready had in my stash. You see, after finishing my Countdown to Christmas, I had fabric remaining that I wanted to use, so I found this cute wall hanging to make. The quilt block itself is pretty simple, it’s the applique that takes quite a bit of time. There were quite a few pieces to cut draw, cut out and assemble. Once the pieces were all ironed onto the block, I had to do a blanket stitch (on my machine) around each and every piece. Then it came down to completing the block, attaching the backing, batting and loops and then quilting it, which I also did on my machine.

This is my latest completed project, a Partridge in a Pear Tree.

I could make one for each of the 12 days, but I don’t have enough scraps to do that. I love the fabrics though, so maybe I’ll just have to buy some more! :-D

This is really lovely – I especially like the clean design and warm colouring. The whole design is so neat.

I have been taking more and more interest in bags of late. In Britain they are trying to phase out the dreadful waste of plastic bags and so cloth ones rather than the thicker plastic replacement are more tempting. I used to have a really old-fasioned portable Singer sewing machine (the kind without bobbins) although it only stitched plain stitches on the front and chain stitches on the back you could make virtually anything with it in next to no time – and to this day I regret parting with it. I purchased an electric machine and it never seemed to sew so easily or neatly. I seemed to get loads and loads of puckering and I gradually found myself doing more and more by hand regretting the loss of a machine I had given away. If only I could have asked for it back!

Thanks Polly! I do tend to gravitate towards these colors when I’m making anything for myself.

Sounds like you had a great machine, I’m sorry you gave it away. Your new machine may just need some adjustments to make it sew smoothly, it’s usually something fairly simple like adjusting the bobbin tension that can relieve the puckering problem.

Heidi – Thank you very much. I have very good instructors, my mom and my sisters. We grew up with sewing, it seems to be in our blood!

Rhonda – This one was extremely gratifying because I used all scraps. It’s also my first wall hanging that I’ve made on my own. :-D
