Found – One New Quilt Shop!

posted in sewing |

I woke up today not overly enthused and really felt like staying in my pajamas the entire day.  The only thing on my agenda was a follow up doctor’s appointment and that wasn’t until after lunch, so, I figured what the heck and sat down at the computer to do some sewing supply shopping.  Oh what a happy day this turned out to be and for you guys who are reading this, equate this to something like finding the elusive but high quality Volvo Parts or something along those lines!

I have become completely hooked on Nancy Halverson’s designs.  I am currently working on a block of the month quilt called “Beattitudes” and I also made the “Countdown to Christmas” which she designed.  I recently purchased her latest book, “Cider Mill Road” and have several items I’d like to make.  I’ve been purchasing fabric and have been hunting down the cutest buttons she uses in her designs.  Noone around here seems to have them, so this morning I started looking online.  I went to the website of the button manufacturer and clicked on a link that took me to retailers in my area and I couldn’t believe it, but there was a quilt shop I’d never seen or heard of and it was only 13 miles from my house!

Well, I have to tell you, I was so excited I hopped right into the shower and got myself spiffied up so that I could head out.  I grabbed my GPS and headed on down the road.  In about 25 minutes after leaving my house I was standing in the middle of fabric heaven, aka located in historic downtown Garland, TX.

This store was filled with so many fabrics it was difficult to contain myself! I loved all of the colors and selections, they even have one whole section dedicated to Civil War era fabrics and they are beautiful. They also had an entire section with nothing but sewing and quilting supplies, just about anything you could possibly need was there. I ran across a few fabrics I had been looking for from my Christmas collection and I did buy those as well as some quilt inspired notecards. Sadly, the buttons I was searching for they did not have so I will probably order them online tomorrow.

Besides all the fabrics and supplies, they have a full schedule of classes that they offer. I am currently considering one for next Saturday, but, as it turns out, my husband may need to have knee surgery next Friday, so my class may have to wait. I am certainly looking forward to the next time my Mom comes to visit as I know she will also enjoy this shop.

OMG…I bet you were in heaven in that store. It is so difficult for me to go into Joanns, Hobby Lobby or Hancocks just for some notions because I have to put on my blinders so that I do not look at fabric.

Ellen – It was great! It’s in old downtown Garland and is in one of the old buildings. I loved it! I really want to take a class there. They also have free Friday night events on the 1st Friday of the month (tonight) from 6-midnight. You just take your machine and whatever project you want to work on and sit there and sew!

Quick question from one seamstress to another… I’ve recently moved into a new place and in doing so have realized just how much surplus fabric/supplies I have. Is it excessive to have a big rubbermaid tub full of extra fabric, plus a few 13-gallon bags full of sraps/unused clothes good for revamping, and such? How much fabric do you usually have handy?
Your opinion would be greatly appreciated :D

Jules – As someone who is addicted to purchasing fabric, and someone who is known to “hunt” down quilt shops in order to purchase more fabric, I’m not sure that I am the right person to ask how much fabric is the right amount to have on hand! The only thing I can suggest though is perhaps, rather than keeping it in bins, put your fabrics on shelves, maybe sorted by color, so that when you go to start a new project, you can see what you all ready have.

As for scraps, I never throw away anything larger than 1 inch square pieces. I also try to keep them by color, but I do have a basket I toss many scraps into. I then give those to my mom who makes what are called “Crazy Quilts”, quilts made from all size pieces, that she puts together and gives to a local church charity. Those quilts then go on to be given to those in need. So you see, even a small scrap can serve a huge purpose, it just has to find its way into the right hands.

I don’t tend to sew many clothes, but if it is a simple mend or repair that needs done, do it. If it’s a bigger issue, toss it or donate it. Once it’s in a bin, it’s forgotten anyway.

Hope this helps in some small way?! :-D

Jane – I’m sorry, no, I don’t have the block of the month kits. I purchased my personal kits from a local quilt shop and I know they had so much demand that they are sold out. I was able to locate a website that may still have it available, http://secretworkshop.com/home.php?cat=105 and you may want check them out.

    Thanks for stopping by! :-)

I, too, love this shop! It’s a great place to shop and to just spend your time. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the classes and the clubs are fun, and the fabric!! Especially the reproduction fabric–it’s just beautiful. I’ve shopped there for many years and I never get tired of going back to see what’s new.
