What Would We Do Without Computers?

posted in family, home |

I’ve been thinking about this of late and though I’d share my thoughts. You see, I’ve sort of been monitoring how we use our computers in our home. Obviously, I use mine for blogging and earning some side income, not to mention to showcase my sewing projects, but I also use a computer as my primary tool for working from home for my part time job. My husband uses his computer for work, but also for downloading music and uploading movies. My daughter uses the computer for staying in touch with all of her friends via IM and email, but also, she utilizes the computer a lot for school, whether it’s homework or research projects, I’m not sure what we would do without the computers.

I have to think that one of the biggest benefits of the internet is being able to take advantage of search tools. I know my daughter has had to research some rather obscure items and being able to type a word or two into a search box and come up with instant answers and images for homework problems has been a huge time saver. Imagine if we had to run to the library any time she needed something. I think we’d be setting up camp there instead of spending our time in the comfort of our home!

I remember one English assignment where she had about 100 words that she had to determine what part of speech they were. Many of them we could figure out, but some words can be used in more than one way and so it was tricky. Being able to do a search on a word to learn if it’s a noun, adjective or verb saved my daughter so much time. Yes, we could have sat and looked those words up in the dictionary, but her assignment may not have been completed on time.

I do wish I had taken the time to search Allergy Control Using AAfter.com Web Search before moving to Dallas. You see, I didn’t realize until after we moved here that Dallas is one of the worst areas in the country for allergy sufferers and I have had so many problems since moving here. I have constant headaches from April-October and I now live on allergy medications. Knowing ahead of time what I was getting myself into may have allowed me to take precautions before arriving.

So, my point is, I’m not sure what we would do without our computers and the information highway we have at our fingertips. We do have friends that do not have internet access in their home and I often wonder how their daughter’s get the information they need for their homework assignments. Maybe they camp out at the library?

I work in a very information intense field and I am amazed how valuable the Internet is. When I first started working, there was no Internet and we just spent a lot of time camped out at the library.

Anne – I have to admit, we are totally reliant on technology and the internet. Unfortunately, if something breaks or quits working, I have no idea how to fix it!

I’ve worked in either journalism or public relations for most of my career. When I first started as a reporter, we only used computers for word processing — the layout was still done by pulling long strips of newsprint off a printer and creating a newspaper by pasting those columns, ads, photos and everything else together by hand. That’s all changed, of course — layout is all done on computers, resulting in the ability to get everything together faster and make last minute changes with little to no trouble.

And then, of course, there’s the Internet…

I was thinking about the same thing the other day, trying to remember what we did before the internet. Vaguely recall going to the library and doing a search through the card catalogs (they had keywords at the bottom of the little cards, but you had to follow the Dewey Decimal System mostly) and then walking over to the stacks, finding the book, going through the index, rifling through the pages and then not finding much.
Or you could just ask the reference librarian. But all this took a lot of time. Now you can have the answer in seconds usually.

Happy Easter – My business centers around the computer and the wonderful world of the web as I am a web designer / developer. I think our life would be a lot less complex if things were like they were in the days of yesteryear. When we lost power in NH for 12 days before Christmas due to an ice storm, I rediscovered the library. Before then, I would read on-line and research on-line. I now make more frequent trips to the good old library – a forgotten place in today’s high pace, electronic, computerized society. Our library is inviting to come to – grab a book, get a cup of coffee, and in the winter time, settle down in front of the big fireplace and enjoy an afternoon read.

Before I got my home computer I had no idea what I was missing and sometimes I think ignorance is bliss because I wouldn’t be spending so much time on it now. If I didn’t have access at this point though I would be lost. Hope your Easter was a good one.
