Kenmore vs Dyson

Kenmore vs Dyson

I’m looking for people who own a Dyson vacuum. Okay, I’m in serious need of some personal experiences and opinions when it comes to vacuums.

In the 20+ years my husband and I have been married, we’ve managed to go through several vacuum cleaners and here I am again, in need of a new one. We’ve gone through 2 or 3 Hoovers and I won’t buy one again, they’re not worth the money. My last vacuum was a canister vac by Kenmore and it did a fantastic job, especially when it came to picking up dog hair. I like the canister because it makes doing the stairs easier and I can get under the furniture with it. The only downside was that the handle of the vacuum itself was top heavy and, because of that, the vacuum fell over and broke some of the connectors. I’ve had this particular vacuum for almost 10 years and it has always worked very well, until it broke. I took it in for repair and they want $275 to repair it, so I figure I can buy a new one instead.

I would like to purchase another Kenmore canister vac because I was totally happy with it. My husband on the other hand, wants a Dyson. I really think he wants the Dyson simply because it looks high tech. I have done price comparisons and it would cost at least $100 more to purchase the Dyson and it only comes in an upright. I guess what I need to figure out is if the extra $100 is worth it or not.

Let me know if you have personal experiences that you can share with me. I need to make a decision fast because I need to clean my floors!

I am the queen of breaking vaccuums so understand! I have the purple Dyson and love it. I have not tried a Kenmore but will say I have never heard a bad word about a Dyson. Good luck!

I had the same debate about a year ago too. In the end I decided to go with Dyson and never looked back. The Dyson vacuum provided additional suction that picked up a lot more dirt in my carpet than my old vacuum. Now my carpet feels a lot cleaner than before

I have the purple Dyson and don’t think it is worth the money. It is a good vacuum but the price! Greg has a cheapy $100 vacuum and it cleans just as well. They Dyson has little holes that hubby has to clean out with his air gun. Our housekeeper recommends anything Hoover.

Heidi – Thanks for the input. I’m heading out this afternoon to start my vacuum shopping. I’m really leaning towards a canister because I can get the edges of the floors better as well as all the window ledges, something I can’t do with an upright. I’m going to check out both though.

plin – Nothing beats good suction when it comes to a vacuum! The Kenmore and the Dyson claim to have the same suction power, so I’m still trying to figure out if Dyson is worth the extra $100. Thanks for the input! :-D

Thanks Karen! I’ve gone through several Hoovers, they don’t seem to last too long and don’t have the suction for the dog hair IMO. Uprights always seem to have issues, no matter what the brand. I’m going out vacuum shopping this afternoon, we’ll see what I find! :-D

I love my Kenmore canisters. I have had 2 of them over the past 20 years and they are by far my favorite. In between the two I tried a bagless upright Hoover and it picked up the hair OK but you could tell it was eating away at my carpet from all the carpet fuzz that was in the container you emptied. There are just too many choices these days.

Be sure to let us know what you got! Would you do a review, too? I’m always looking for a new vacuum, unfortunately. :S

Dyson’s are heavy and not very good. They are also expensive. If you want a good machine–ORECK. I LOVE my Oreck.

I was going through a vacuum every 6 months–literally. I bought the Oreck Ironman and have nothing but great luck with that little guy. I finally replaced the hose (it had a little hole where it came out of the machine) after 3 years!

I don’t have carpeting–only hard wood floors, but I do have some area rugs. I have cat litter that I vacuum daily and it is the ONLY machine that picks it up and does not shoot it out the back.

I don’t work for Oreck, but I’m not kidding when I say that I would do ads for them–for FREE!! Buy an Oreck–you won’t regret it. Oh–if you try it out and don’t like it, they will take it back for a full refund. :)

We need a new vacuum too. Ours is Dirt Devil, not that old… and is having issues. Of course, my friends who have Dyson’s say that they have problems too… so I am beginning to wonder what brand to go to. Good luck!

We had an Oreck. It was a sturdy tank that outlasted my first marriage. When it started to die, I thought it was worth it to try and fix it up and keep it going. I’m frugal that way. However, my wife really wanted a Dyson. So, now we have a yellow Dyson. I must say, I like it even better than I liked the Oreck. It has great suction, is lighter than the Oreck, and you can detach the hoses in a way that makes it great for cleaning moldings, banisters, etc. As far as I can tell, I can do much more with my Dyson than I could with a canister.

We have a dog and a cat and live in the woods, so we get lots of fur and dust to vacuum up, and with my dust allergies I like to make sure we get as much dust up as possible. The Dyson is great.

That said, I’ve never had a Kenmore, so I can’t really compare it.

Sherri – I know what you mean about Hoover, I’ve gone through 2 of them and never want another one. I have really liked my Kenmore, but my husband wants the Dyson, I think he just thinks it’s cool!

Rebecca – If I can ever make a decision, I’ll sure let you know. Turns out the Kenmore canister, with all the bells and whistles (which of course I thought was pretty cool) is as much as the Dyson, so I’m going to have to do some more comparisons and shop around.

Lin – I just had a friend of mine tell me about her Orek and she really raved about it too. Guess I’ll add Orek to my comparison chart! Thanks for the input. :-D

Aldon – Thanks! I’ve had a couple of people recommend the Orek, but I find what you had to say about the Dyson most interesting. I also have to decide if I want to go back to a bagless system which is what Dyson is. I really hate cleaning those dirt containers!

Cleaning the dirt containers? All we ever to is take the container out and empty it in the trash and then put it back in the vacuum cleaner. I’ve actually found it easier than dealing with the vacuum bags.

we have an oreck and I HATE it on my carpets – it weighs less but is so difficult to push. It is good on the hardwood floors

My daughter swears by her dyson for both and she had an eureka before
