All Squared Up

posted in sewing |

I’ve taken some time off from work and blogging so that I might spend time enjoying my family and getting a few other things accomplished. It really is amazing just how much I can get done when I don’t sit down in front of my computer!

Today I cut fabric and turned it into this. I machine pieced this top for a baby quilt for a gift for a friend of mine. To begin with, I cut 73 5×5 inch squares and the borders which are all 5 inches in width and vary in length depending on their placement in the quilt. I then pieced together 9 of the squares to form the center of the quilt top.

Next, I added the first set of borders.

I pieced it all together and this is the end result.

Now I just need to get it quilted!

That is so pretty, with unique colors. Are you going to machine quilt it or have it quilted by someone?

Louise – I have family that have certainly helped me learn to piece together quilt tops, but I also took a class at a local quilt shop which helped too. I really do enjoy it!

Karen – I think I’ll have someone else do this one because it is a gift and I want it to have more than just “stitch in the ditch” which is about the only thing I know how to quilt! LOL

Lin – I haven’t yet learned how to hand quilt, although, I’m thinking that the next time my mom is visiting I will have her teach me. The last time she was here, I machine quilted (very basic) a kids quilt and she taught me how to do binding. So, I figure the next thing I need to learn is how to hand quilt. Did you teach yourself?

No, I took a class. I learned to hand-piece and hand-quilt, even hand-cut (without a rotary cutter!) in my very first class! I still look back on that class with glassy-eyed fondness. It just gets back to the real beginnings of quilting and that’s what I wanted. To this day, I hand-quilt nearly everything! Especially the bed-sized quilts.

I sometimes see the lady who taught me, and I STILL thank her for introducing me to quilting. She must think I’m a weirdo!! LOL!

I do hope to learn how to hand quilt, someday! I can machine quilt, but I haven’t done much of it and have mostly taught myself. I took a piecing class and learned a lot of neat tricks there. I can just never seem to find a class that is scheduled at a time I can fit it into my schedule! I do keep trying though. :-D

Mylene – This is truly one of the easiest quilt tops I’ve made yet! Very few seams to align and it comes together very quickly.

Duni= Thank you! I am starting another quilt top today, a bit more challenging, and I need to go get backing fabric for this one. Any excuse to go the fabric store!

It’s actually pretty amazing how much you can get done when you just get up and turn that computer off! And keep it off! I don’t do it often, but when I do, I’m like “Wow! I can get the house entirely clean, cook, do laundry, pay bills, and finish a project – all in one day!” Who knew? ;)

If we begin to count up the hours we spend on our comps by the month or year, it will surely come out to some truly astronomical number. We are the true computer junkies! People don’t realize it, but “bloggin’ ain’t easy!” LOL!

Lovely quilt and I hope you had a lovely holiday!
