A Family of Quilters

posted in family, sewing |

I get asked many times “where did you get you sewing skills?” Well, I really believe I inherited many of my skills from my mom! You see, we grew up watching her sew, whether she was making our clothes, clothes for our dolls, or piecing quilts.

As we all got married and went our own way, we have always remained close and we discovered several years ago that we all have a love for fabric and for creating things with it. We have even been know to head of to parts unknown, just to track down a new quilt shop or attend a quilt show!

Here is a shot of my mom, the leader of this quilting group, my sisters Karen and Grace. This was one get together I didn’t make it too, but they are showing off the tabletoppers/wallhangings they made.

So you see, I really do think the sewing gene ran in the family!

It does sound like the sewing gene runs in your family. Unfortunately in mine, I was a skip. I used to love to watch my mom and grandma sew all the time, they ran a sewing/alterations/custom made gowns shop when we were little.

It’s so true! The other day I gave Buggy (my grandaughter/ 5yo) a pair of pajamas that I just made for her. She asked me if my Mom taught me how to sew, then asked if I would teach her how to sew also. You know that brought a smile to my face! I really enjoyed the fact that she made those connections and wants to keep it going.

Leigh – Funny thing is, I didn’t really get into sewing this much until my daughter was older and I got tired of purchasing those cheap Halloween costumes. I got my 25 year old sewing machine out one day and made her a witches costume and the sewing bug took hold! I haven’t stopped since! (I even went out and bought a new machine!)

Buggys – I recently worked with my own daughter on a sewing project she did for school. It was amazing to watch her cut and stitch and create. I felt like I was passing along something important! :-D

Rosie – My favorite part of quilting is the beginning of the project, piecing all the fabric together. It’s like doing a puzzle and I love watching it all come together. Hope you enjoy it!

P.S. Your blog is having some technical difficulties, only the bottom half of the window is visible. Email me if you want a screen shot. I know I’d want to be warned if my blog had a problem! I’ll come back and browse more later :)

Rachel – My 13 year old is enjoying sewing, although she doesn’t do it very often. She enjoys the crafty side of sewing and last year made a 16 inch tall fabric doll with clothes for a school reading project. It was actually pretty amazing!
I’m sorry my site wasn’t working correctly for you yesterday and I do appreciate you letting me know. I was so busy restoring a computer yesterday that I never got online at all so was totally unaware. It is loading okay now, at least for me, so I hope whatever it was worked itself out.
