Snow in Texas

Snow in Texas, originally uploaded by the_sewingmom1.

It is hard to believe that this is what I was looking at less than 2 weeks ago when I stood outside my front door. We live just northeast of downtown Dallas and we received 13 inches of the white stuff in a 24 hour period. This set all kinds of records and made me question why we ever left Chicago, leaving our snow blower behind!

If you live somewhere that gets snowfall on a regular basis, it is probably difficult for you to understand why this is such a hardship here in the Dallas area. Basically, it comes down to this. Texas doesn’t own a snow plow. Not a single one. As you can see from the photo, the roads were completely covered and this photo was taken around 8 in the morning. Up north, these streets would have all ready been cleared!

We also don’t own a real coat anymore. We left the parkas behind when we moved south, along with the snow shovels, sleds and snow blower. This was excellent, wet, snowman building snow. So, my daughter and I layered up the best we could and headed out. We built 2 of the best snowman we’ve ever built (I forgot to upload those pics) all while wearing jeans (you know how they soak up the cold moisture), sweatshirts, and some thin driving gloves. But, we did have a blast and enjoyed the beauty of the day.

I am glad the snow is gone though. As pretty as it was it made for very dangerous conditions here. There were mass power outages, people without heat, and people, including me, who couldn’t get to work. I am definitely looking forward to Spring.

Wow no snow plows. I live in Eastern Canada, so… I see this all the time. I’m glad you had fun making your snowmen, and yeah…. wet jeans aren’t any fun.

Holy smokes! What suburb of the metroplex is this?

I lived in Wichita Falls, for 10 years, with my family!

I did Bizzniss in the metroplex. My daughter goes to college there, and lives within a stones throw of Jerry J’s new monument to America’s Team.

Kids, these days. She hasn’t let me know it was this bad.

I am using Johns EZ list, I think this is my first time here. I like what I see! You’ll be seeing more of me, cause I hate to just drop, I like to comment.

Comment me something over at my place, and included, where is this pic actually, If you don’t mind sharing8>)

    Peace.

Living in the PHoenix area and having grown up in Ohio…I can so relate to why a “little” snow could cause such panic. It is nice to play in…and look at.

No snow plows…. wow!! I didn’t know that, thanks for explaining. We have winter about 6 months of the year… I think last year we had snow in May. :S We only got 2 feet with the latest storm that came through Thursday. Wasn’t too bad, lol. Now if you start talking about Texas heat, I’ve melted into a steamy little puddle before you finish your sentence! TOO HOT!

I understand how you feel! I live in Madrid, at Spain, and I don´t know if it is because climate change, but this year it has snowed a few times. And it is not normal!
So you could imagine: the full city, which is more than 2 million people, was collapsed on a huge traffic jam!

Fortunately snow did not remained more than 2 days..

Hi! It was so nice to find you tonight through entrecard! I enjoyed looking around your site -
My father was in the Navy so I understand the moving around some. We have some things in common – I grew up in Palatine, IL, just outside of Chicago. Loved the snow then! I lived in Maryland for 23 years and moved to Atlanta, GA just 3 years ago. My husband went to school here at GA Tech….he said not to worry, it doesn’t snow in Atlanta…well we’ve had the fluffy white stuff every winter and twice so far this winter…HA – so much for no snow here and I left the kids winter boots in MD!

Yikes…I moved back to Northern Canada this year from Florida and we are having an awesome winter in Canada. Florida is experiencing some horrific cold temps and they are not to happy about it.One never knows what Mother Nature has in store for us and she is letting us know that she is most definitely in control :)
