Keeping Updated with GPS – Map Update Month

posted in home |

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of NAVTEQ. All opinions are 100% mine.

Two weeks ago my daughter had a softball tournament in Keller, Texas. This is a little over an hour away, so, with my atlas in hand and my GPS navigator plugged in, we headed out early in the morning to get to the fields on time. Well, my atlas is a number of years old, and apparently, so are the maps in my GPS! Neither one knew that a new toll road had been built, so both were telling me to go a longer route. Then, when we were attempting to take an on ramp to change highways, there was a massive amount of construction delays that had traffic standing still. Very frustrating when we’re in a time crunch. I kept trying to get an alternate route on the GPS, but it wasn’t seeming to be working properly. I was so frustrated, I finally put everything down and directed my husband by shear instinct! Thankfully, I have fairly good instincts when it comes to direction and we managed to arrive on time, although, we were mentally drained. Thank goodness we weren’t the ones having to play softball!

This past weekend, we did almost the same trip, except this time we were heading to Southlake. Because of our previous experience, and the fact that I had heard about NAVTEQ’s Map Update Month, I wanted to make sure our GPS had the most up to date maps installed and I made sure it was working properly so we could find an alternate route if necessary. NAVTEQ is the company whose technology and maps drive most of the in-car navigation systems and the leading brands of GPS-enabled devices in the US, so when they say it’s time to update your GPS maps, it’s time to update! I can tell you from personal experience, Dallas is constantly building new roads, particularly toll roads, and these can make our drive time so much shorter, we just have to know how to get there! It’s also great to be able to get a quick alternate route when we come upon unexpected traffic delays. It’s really amazing just how much we do rely on our GPS system, we’ve had it for less than 2 years, but it’s really made getting to all these tournaments so much easier.

Visit www.mapupdatemonth.com for more information. According to the NAVTEQ Navigation Benefits Study, updating your GPS maps could:

-help you save up to $200 a year just by using a navigation device*
-help you drive with confidence
-help you save time (A traffic enabled GPS device can save you 4 days of driving time*)
-help you use less fuel
-reduce your CO2 emissions by 20% just by driving with a GPS device*
-help maintain the optimum performance from your system
-help you know better roadside options

Since we just celebrated Earth Day, I think all of these factors are enough to get me to update my maps (if I hadn’t all ready done it!).  If you haven’t all ready updated, simply visit the NAVTEQ site and use the drop down menus that correspond with the type of GPS unit you have.
