Freak Storms

posted in home |

My daughter wanted to go to Olive Garden today for lunch, so, when I finished working, I got myself cleaned up and we headed down the road.  The sun was shining and it was overcast in the distance, but I really didn’t think much about it.  Guess I should have!  We hadn’t gone 5 miles when the rain started and before I knew it, it was raining so hard I could only see about 25 feet in front of the car.  I pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant and it was raining so hard, there was no way I was getting out of the car!  I told my daughter we were going to sit and wait for it to lighten up.

We waited, and waited, and waited some more, all the while, our stomachs growling!  It was raining so hard the parking lot looked like it had a large stream going through it.  I didn’t have an umbrella, and even if I had one, it wouldn’t have done any good.  The wind was blowing so hard, the rain looked like it was going sideways.  Then it started to hail.  I hate hail!  It damages everything and is the biggest reason insurance prices are so high in Texas.  Thankfully, it wasn’t a lot of hail, and stopped pretty quickly, even though the rain kept on coming.

It finally lightened up a little bit and we decided to make a run for it.  Of course, we were drenched when we entered the doors of the restaurant, and, within 10 minutes of our being seated, the rain had completely stopped!  It was one freak storm, that’s for sure, but we did have a  very nice lunch and the car suffered no damage from the hail.  Turned out to be a nice day!

I seem to be reading more and more about these freak storms. Is it an effect of global warming, I wonder. Never used to hear of so many. We’ve had some of those too, bad enough to cause floods and huge traffic snarls in the city. But right now, we’re having just the right amount of rain.

Sounds crazy. I was taking to my mom on the phone the other day when all of a sudden it sounded to me like her car was being pelted with thousands for rocks. A random hail storm. So strange.
