Not So Wordless Wednesday – Go Eagles!

posted in family, kids |

1st game 019

What happens when 700+ band kids want to spell? They run like mad around the field until they form the perfect letters to spell out the team mascot, EAGLES!

Personally, I thought they did a great job, especially since it was the first performance and the first football game of the season. By the way, the football team won, 33-27 in a real nail biter of a game!

In case you’re wondering (I know you are!), my daughter is somewhere near the top of the L.

I was also in marching band, when I was younger. The Abbeville Grenadiers won the South Carolina State Marching Band Championship 9 years in a row, were ranked in the top four nationally, and held The Southeastern Tournament Of Bands competition every year for decades. Today, however, it is no longer the great organization it once was and isn’t of much consequence anymore. A band room filled with thousands of trophies, plaques, and banners – now holds a class of around fifty uninspired marching band students.

The key to all of these programs is: excellent band directorial leadership, a well organized and supportive band booster cadre, and the highly motivated kids to make it all happen [through practice, hard work, and fund raising]. Alas, these factors change largely over time. Hopefully, your own program fares much better than our own has in the last twenty years.

We like high school football too. That is one very huge high school band there! Looks like they did a great job! I always enjoy the bands at half time. I wish that had some on the NFL games instead of just the sport yakety yak yak by the so-called experts who just seem to criticize the players all the time. Happy weekend.

Holy cow, that’s a giant high school. Your band has more members than my son’s entire school! Best of luck to the team this year!
