Kitchen Organization

I love looking for kitchen organization ideas when I’m looking through home magazines. If I had the money, I’d have new cabinets installed in kitchen. Our kitchen is rather large, but I don’t think it was very well thought out. For one thing, the pantry is down the hall, not exactly convenient. There are quite a few cabinets, but I don’t like them. The island itself is huge and the cabinets are as deep as the island is wide. I practically have to crawl into the cabinet to retrieve anything that has been pushed to the back, a total hassle.

If I could install new cabinets, I would include many of the features that we had in our smaller kitchen in our previous house. I really liked having a built in trash can, although I might upgrade to a compactor instead. I also had a built in recycling bin, very handy. One of my favorite features in my other kitchen was the built in spice rack. It was the full size of the cabinet door, right next to the stove, so it held all of my spices and was so convenient while I was cooking. I’ve used a lot of different kitchen spice racks, but the built in one was my favorite. The size of it allowed me to keep all the spice jars in one neat, organized spot.

Right now I’m using a lazy susan turn table in an upper cabinet. It would be okay, but the shelves aren’t adjustable and so the spice jars barely fit. Sometimes they fall over and then it’s like a game of dominoes, one jar falls over and then the next one falls, and the next one, and so on. I feel like I’m always picking up spice jars, and I also find it difficult to quickly grab the spice I want. I thought about getting a wall spice rack, but the only place I could put it would be right above the stove. I find that all the heat and steam coming off the stove causes the spices to go bad, so I don’t like them that close. So, I’ll just keep looking for ideas in spice racks until I can find one that works best for me in this kitchen, and, I’ll keep dreaming of getting new cabinets so I can be better organized when I cook!

How do you keep your spices organized?
