College is Knocking

I walked down to the mailbox, opened the little metal door and pulled out the stack of mostly junk mail that the mailman had deposited there. As I walked back towards the front door, I was sifting through the junk in my hand and notice an envelope addressed to my 15 year old daughter, return address, University of Miami.

OH MY! My daughter has received her first official mailing from higher education! I must mention that inside the envelope was basically unsolicited junk wanted my daughter to request more information from their school, but the fact remains, I was forced into a reality check that told me we only have 2 more years before she is off to college!

Decisions need to be made, scholarships discovered, funds found (yea right!). There is so much to do and I am now in panic mode. I always thought the worst part of having a teenage daughter was going to be her emotions and mood swings, (not to mention mine), but I’m thinking the whole college thing is even worse!

HELP ME!! :-D

It’s in Coral Gables, FL First she said, “that’s so far away!”, then she remembered that she had told me she wanted to go to school far away! LOL

Toss all of that crap–it just overwhelms you. You are better off just visiting the colleges you are interested in and getting a stack of papers then. Keep them in a file so you can sort and weed as you go along. Otherwise you will be drowning in college brochures.

Also, start visiting colleges NOW. It takes time and the years will fly before you can get to them all. It’s a very time consuming process.

But remember to have fun through it all too. It is a very scary and emotional time sending your first one off to college–for BOTH of you!

I know my oldest niece just turned 17 and is a Junior in high school. My other two nieces are 14 each and freshman. It comes very fast. Luckily my baby is only in fourth grade so I have time. I’m the one back in college at the moment. I will say it’s a much different experience from the last time when I was 18 and 19. :)
