Exercise Anyone?

Exercise Anyone?

Finally, the weather has started to cool just slightly and the humidity is lower.  So, what did I do to take advantage of the nicer weather in Dallas?  I started walking again!

Yesterday was my first walk in probably a year, I just hadn’t felt motivated.  But, lately, I’d been feeling somewhat achy and I attribute that to spending so much time on the computer, sitting.  I laced up my sneakers yesterday morning and headed out for a walk that is about 1.25 miles.  When I got home, my daughter got me to do the Wii Fit which informed me that I hadn’t been on the program for 350 days!  OOPS!  So, I did about 20 minutes of balance and aerobic exercises and by the end of the day, I was feeling the burn in my thighs!

This morning, as much as I didn’t want to, I laced up the sneakers again and, this time with our dog along, I repeated my walk.  It was an absolutely beautiful morning and I’m so glad I made myself go.  The dog needs the exercise as much as I do and as soon as we got home, she jumped in the pool and then came in the house, laid down and has been asleep ever since!  I think I wore her out.

I have my mammogram this afternoon as well as my annual bone density test.  I’m hoping that my year of being on prescription medication for bone loss will show some payoff today.  Wish me luck!

Bee Active and Help Make a Difference

This is my new pedometer and I’ve been making attempts at putting it to use to monitor how much I walk during the day. Nine months ago I was diagnosed with high cholesterol and have been fighting since then to get it down. I’ve worked hard on improving my diet and have tried to introduce exercise into my routine, but it hasn’t been easy. So, I decided to start walking again, something easy to fit into my schedule and something I do anyway.

To motivate me even more to be active, I learned that the miles I walk or the minutes I spend exercising can also benefit the Breast Cancer Network. Raising money for breast cancer research and programs to better serve those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer is something I’m always interested in. I discovered that from 4/1/09-10/31/09 with BeeWell Miles I can log my miles walked and/or the time I spend exercising and Bumble Bee Foods will donate $0.15/mile to the Breast Cancer Network. So, something I need to be doing anyway, and something that costs me no money, can benefit not just me, but also a great cause.

BeeWell Miles is also a great site full of tools to help me lead a healthier life. I can learn ways to eat healthier, monitor my diet and monitor my exercising. I can also ask my friends and family to join and help the cause. Plus, each day you log miles or game codes from pink Bumble Bee cans you could instantly win one of 15,000 prizes!! Now, I can’t always get outside and walk, so I still strap on my pedometer and hit the old treadmill. Those miles count too!

Exercising – A Triple Threat

Are you active?  I have always tried to be somewhat active, I’ve even been a member of a gym in the past, I’ve attempted at home exercise programs and I’ve even done walks around the neighborhood. The gym went well until I injured my shoulder working one of the upper arm weight machines and I never returned. Since then, I’ve made attempts to walk regularly and, most recently, purchased our Wii Fit to make exercising more fun. I still find that I’m not nearly as dedicated to exercising as I should be.  Now that I’m back working, even though it’s only part time, it has become even more difficult to squeeze in a beneficial workout.

I’ve recently learned of a new workout program called XFLOWSION which combines the best moves from martial arts, power yoga, and dance to give a full body workout and you don’t have to go to the gym to do it. It’s all on DVD! It’s called TRIPLE TRAINING™ and it uses all 3 mediums to give you one great workout, all in the comfort of your own home. This program promotes fat burning and muscle toning and promises that you will never get bored.

I think XFLOWSION is just what I need to help me stay dedicated to working out.  How do you stay motivated?

Dear Diary

(received in an email)

A WOMAN’S WEEK AT THE GYM
If you read this without laughing out loud, there is something wrong with you. This is dedicated to everyone who ever attempted to get into a regular workout routine.

Dear Diary,

For my birthday this year, my daughter (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me.  Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.  I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Belinda, who identified herself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear.  My daughter seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

MONDAY:

Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Belinda waiting for me.  She is something of a Greek goddess – with blonde hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!!  Belinda gave me a tour and showed me the machines.  I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which she conducted her aerobics class after my workout today.  Very inspiring! Belinda was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time she was around.  This is going to be a FANTASTIC week!!

TUESDAY:

I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door.  Belinda made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air, and then she put weights on it!  My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile.  Belinda’s rewarding smile made it all worthwhile.  I feel GREAT!!  It’s a whole new life for me.
WEDNESDAY:

The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it.  I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals.  Driving was OK as long as I didn’t try to steer or stop.  I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot.  Belinda was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members.  Her voice is a little too perky for early in the morning and when she scolds, she gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying.  My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Belinda put me on the stair monster.  Why the Hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators?  Belinda told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life.  She said some other shit too.
THURSDAY:

Belinda was waiting for me with her vampire-like teeth exposed as her thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl.  I couldn’t help being a half a hour late; it took me that long to tie my shoes.  Belinda took me to work out with dumbbells. When she was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom.  She sent another skinny witch to find me.  Then, as punishment, she put me on the rowing machine — which I sank.

FRIDAY:

I hate that witch Belinda more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world.  Stupid, skinny, anemic, anorexic little cheerleader.  If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat her with it.  Belinda wanted me to work on my triceps.  I don’t have any triceps!  And if you don’t want dents in the floor, don’t hand me the damned barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich.  The treadmill flung me off, and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher.  Why couldn’t it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

SATURDAY:

Belinda left a message on my answering machine in her grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today.  Just hearing her made me want to smash the machine with my planner.  However, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel.

SUNDAY:

I’m having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over.  I will also pray that next year my daughter (the little shit) will choose a gift for me that is fun — like a root canal or a hysterectomy.  I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds!!!
